Sir,

A report has reached British-American Tobacco

Company (China) Limited, a Company associated with this Company: that the Government of Hong Kong contemplates revising its system of taxation of cigarettes and tobacco, and it is believed that it

may be the intention of the Hong Kong Government to increase the

taxation of "high-grade" cigarettes to a greater extent than that

of cheaper grades.

It would be greatly appreciated if a cable could be despatched (at this Company's expense) to Hong Kong, to enquire

whether any such revision of the system of taxation is in contempla-

tion, and if the Hong Kong Government could be informed that such a

revision of system would very injuriously affect this Company's

business of exporting high-grade cigarettes to Hong Kong.
